Daniil Medvedev vs. Dominic Thiem

Picks: Medvedev ML (-110)
Over 40.5

Medvedev simply did not have his best stuff. I loved him to win the tournament after the Novak Djokovic fiasco saw the expected champ eliminated. Medvedev has been great in the US Open, having got to the quarterfinals without dropping a set. He had relatively fresh legs and is known to be a superb athlete. Thiem, on the other hand, has played more games and has dropped a few sets along the way, albeit nothing concerning. Medvedev also has the advantage as the better hard-court player over Thiem, who’s best surface is likely clay. Both players have an incredible return game, so break points should have came often. Because of this, I felt that the match could have sailed over 40.5 in a four-setter, although it had all the makings of a five set battle. In the end, Thiem got the best of Medvedev in two tiebreakers, as Medvedev really struggled with his second-serve. Had Medvedev been able to come out on top of just one of those tiebreaks, we would have been much happier with the results.

Final: 6-2, 7-6, 7-6, Thiem

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox

Pick: Over 8.5 (+100)

This is what I would refer to as a “contrarian” over. The public was all over the under, with Rays ace Blake Snell on the mound. They know Boston has been struggling and that Tampa’s offense has been quiet of late. However, Blake Snell has not been nearly as effective as he has been in years past and he is struggling to make it past the fifth inning in 2020. Although the Rays bullpen is good, this doesn’t exactly set up for an 8.5 total, especially given the Red Sox notable pitching woes. Snell was solid, but threw 100 pitches in just five innnings. That “quiet” Rays offense put up the game-total by themselves in an overwhelming win, with many of the runs coming late.

Final: 11-1 Rays
